Ngorongoro Crater

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve.

Escape

It’s a pioneering experiment in the coexistence of local people (Maasai) and wildlife. Wild animals are protected in the same way as in a national park, with the same rules. The craters are reserved exclusively for wildlife, while the rest of the territory is protected as a reserve with a human presence and activity, that of the Maasais. A shepherding people, they live here with their flocks.

The Ngorongoro Crater, at the center of the conservation area, is the main attraction. A large caldera with a diameter of 19km and a depth of 610m, it is bounded by the surrounding mountains.

Professor Bernard Grzimeck wrote “there’s nothing like it. It is one of the wonders of the world”. The panorama from the belvedere is breathtaking. The crater floor is an immense plain where you’ll find buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, eland, elephant, not to mention black rhino and a large population of predators, lions, hyenas and jackals. With luck, cheetah and leopard can also be seen.
