Escape

The park entrance leads into the rainforest, where you can observe blue monkeys, the famous Guéréza colobus (black and white) and colorful touracos. A panoramic view takes in the Ngurdoto crater, with its rocky steppes and marshes where buffalo and warthogs sometimes bask.

Further north, magnificent hills surround Lake Momela. A subtle blend of blue-green hues, tinged pink in season by the presence of hundreds of pink flamingos. The lake is also home to migratory birds and harnessed guibs. Giraffes, zebras and dik dik can also be seen. Elephants spend most of their time in the forest.

In the early morning and at dusk, you may be lucky enough to come across a leopard, a wildcat or even spotted hyenas.

To the east of the park, Mount Meru, Africa’s 5th highest peak (4566m), dominates the horizon. A four-day trek is possible. An excursion on foot is also possible, with a 2-hour walk to a magnificent waterfall. If the sky is clear, the park offers a breathtaking view of the eternal snows of Kilimanjaro, just 50 kilometers away.
