Mkomazi Park

Located between the Kilimanjaro and Usambara Mountain regions, at the gateway to the town of Same.

Escape

202 km from the town of Arusha, 142 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport and 112 km from the town of Moshi.

Mkomazi means “Pare” in the local language MKO: a small wooden spoon and MAZI: water. This means there’s little water in the park. Semi-arid climate with distinct rainy seasons.

Originally Mkomazi-Umba Game Reserve, Mkomazi became the 27th national park on March 14, 2008, with a surface area of 3245km2. It is bordered by the TSAVO WEST park belonging to Kenya, which means that animals move freely between the two parks.

It is home to a protected and secure area for a program to protect and reintroduce black rhinoceroses, as well as wild dogs.

Since 2021, several groups of rhinos have once again roamed freely in the park.

It’s a wilderness that’s rarely visited, yet the environment is strikingly beautiful, and even if the animals are more at a distance because they’re not used to vehicles, it’s a real pleasure to discover it.
